    SAILS Appropriate User Policy

  • The goal of SAILS in providing access to the Internet is to promote comprehensive access to electronic information to its member libraries and their patrons

    Appropriate use

    • Internet access through SAILS is to be used to advance the mission of its member networks and their respective membership. Internet resources may only be used for legal purposes by public and staff. Examples of unacceptable purposes include, but are not limited to, the following:
      • Harassment of other users
      • Libeling other users
      • Destruction of or damage to equipment, software, or data belonging to the Library, Network, or other users
      • Disruption or unauthorized monitoring of electronic communications
      • Unauthorized copying of copyrighted material
      • Violation of computer system security
      • Unauthorized use of computer accounts, access codes, or network identification numbers assigned to others
      • Use of computer communications facilities in ways that unnecessarily impede the computing activities of others

    Sanctions

    Violations of the SAILS policies will be dealt with in a serious and appropriate manner. The SAILS board is the final authority in determining inappropriate use. Illegal acts involving SAILS computing resources may be subject to prosecution by local, state, or federal authorities.

    Since the Internet is a global electronic network, there is no SAILS control of its uses or content. The Internet and its available resources may contain material of a controversial nature. SAILS cannot censor access to the material nor protect users from offensive information. The network staff cannot control the availability of information links which often change rapidly and unpredictably. Not all sources on the internet provide accurate, complete, or current information. SAILS assumes no responsibility for any damages, direct or indirect, arising from use of its Internet server or from its connections to other Internet services.
